Kanikama Shinchū No. 2
Miniature for orchestra (2022)
Performances
- 2022.12.2, Amare, The Hague (NL)
Residentie Orkest The Hague, conductor Jun Märkl
Written for the Residentie Orkest The Hague’s One Minute Symphony series, Kanikama Shinchū No. 2 is a miniature homage to old-school Sunday morning cartoons, particularly the iconic scores of Carl W. Stalling.
For this particular concert opening Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, the miniature contains a hidden quote. Additionally, it ends on a carefully constructed out-of-tune dominant to Brahms’ F-major. For no particular reason at all, there’s another hidden quote from the Jurassic Park soundtrack.
To embrace the ridiculous one-minute constraint, I created an elaborate fictional cartoon backstory that contrasts with the brief musical duration. Details in the score’s preface.
Promotional mini interview (in Dutch)
“The concert had opened with a piece, the quality of which was much greater than its quantity. The One Minute Symphony, Kanikama Shinsguu [sic] No.2 by young [sic] Dutch composer Gijs van der Heijden displayed a richness and maturity that makes one eager to hear more.”— Michael Hasted, ArtsTalkMagazine.nl
